ESXi hardware requirements

Ensure that the host meets the minimum hardware configurations supported by ESXi 5.5.

Hardware and system resources

To install and use ESXi 5.5, your hardware and system resources must meet the following requirements.

Supported server platforms. A list of supported platforms can be found on the website VMware Compatibility Guide at http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility.

And

ESXi 5.5 installs and runs only on servers with 64-bit x86 processors.

And

ESXi 5.5 requires a host machine with at least two cores.

And

ESXi 5.5 only supports LAHF and SAHF processor instructions.

And

ESXi 5.5 requires the NX / XD bit to be enabled for the CPU in the BIOS.

And

ESXi requires a minimum of 4 GB of physical RAM. Provides at least 8 GB of RAM to fully utilize ESXi features and run virtual machines in typical production environments.

And	raid controllers. Dell PERC (Adaptec RAID or LSI MegaRAID), HP Smart Array RAID or IBM (Adaptec) ServeRAID controllers.

A SCSI disk or local, offline RAID LUN with unallocated space for virtual machines.

In the case of Serial ATA (SATA), a disk is connected via supported SAS controllers or supported internal SATA controllers. SATA drives are treated as remote, not local. These disks are not used as zero partition by default because they are considered remote partitions.

Notes

A SATA CD-ROM drive cannot be attached to an ESXi 5.5 host virtual machine. To use a SATA CD-ROM device, you must use IDE emulation mode.
