Description

Wireless Digital Communications and Signal Processing course. Wireless networks have moved beyond person-to-person communications to connect not only users, but also machines, devices, and objects. Using 420 illustrative slides, this course covers the fundamentals of digital communications and describes the role of digital signal processing in driving wireless technologies. Participants will learn how to analyze the performance of digital modulation techniques such as square amplitude modulation (QAM) and how to apply them to modern wireless systems. Higher order modulations (e.g. 256-QAM, 1024-QAM) achieve greater spectral efficiency, resulting in higher data rates. They form the basis of current and emerging wireless standards (e.g. 5G and Wi-Fi). By changing the modulation and coding, the available data rate and wireless signal strength can be optimized according to the deployment conditions. The Nyquist theorem allows band-limited continuous-time signals to be represented by their discrete-time samples. As a result, a wireless communication system, including channel disturbances such as multipath fading and noise, can be analyzed in terms of their discrete-time counterparts. Time-invariant linear systems characterized by complexity with impulse response can be used to model wireless channels. Deconvolution can be used to smooth out channel effects. Up-sampling, down-sampling, and multi-rate signal processing enable efficient implementation of pulse shaping at the transmitter and matched filtering at the receiver. This course introduces a number of DSP tools related to the design, analysis, and optimization of wireless systems, including practical techniques related to multiple antenna signal processing (beamforming, spatial multiplexing, and space-time coding).
