Precision Agriculture Technology, Precision agriculture is an agricultural management strategy based on observing, measuring and responding to temporal and spatial variability to improve the sustainability of agricultural production. It is used in both crop and livestock production. The importance of all these technologies is to improve agriculture so that higher productivity is achieved, which should lead to greater profitability. Precision agriculture has also been made possible by unmanned aerial vehicles, which are relatively inexpensive and can be operated by inexperienced pilots. These agricultural drones can be equipped with multispectral or RGB cameras to capture many images of a field, which can be stitched together into orthophotos using photogrammetric methods. Geolocating a field allows the farmer to overlay information from analysis of soils and residual nitrogen, as well as information about previous crops and soil resistivity.
Remote sensing technologies provide a diagnostic tool that serves at least two important functions and many other uses in site-specific crop management. Remote sensing can measure the reflectance of light energy from plant canopies, which can be useful in detecting plant stress while there is time to correct the problem. Yield monitors are an essential part of many site-specific management strategies. Yield maps, the visual and numerical product of yield monitors, encourage creative investigation and can provide reliable answers to carefully conducted on-farm experiments.
