We’ll write most of the code in Vivado Design Suite, but you’ll get to see it working in Quartus Prime, EDA Playground, or LabsLand as well, so you can keep up with your favorite tools. The FPGA cards we will use are the BASYS3, from Digilent (with a Xilinx FPGA), and the DE0-CV from Terasic (with an Intel FPGA). This course consists of three main parts:

  • Fundamentals of Computer Architecture, where we’ll cover the basics of processor design and jargon.
  • Designing our own processor, where we will make several design decisions to come up with a software processor that meets our needs.
  • Practical development, where we will write the code, simulate and finally integrate our CPU into an FPGA card. No purchase is required for this part, but it’s definitely helpful to have your own map to follow and continue tinkering with your new software processor in the future.
