Descriptions
Applied Aerodynamics – Airfoils and Wings. This course starts with a theoretical overview of the famous Navier-Stokes equations and how to simplify them to get simpler yet insightful potential equations for quick analysis. Then we will focus on using these equations to derive the Vortex Panel Method (we will also cover all the mathematical aspects) and coding them in Matlab. Based on this, we will perform several analyses of general airfoils to better understand how key design features affect the overall results. In the next section, we will move from the 2D world to the 3D world and now analyze the wings. Similarly, we will start with a theoretical review of the Weissinger method for general wings (we will also cover all the mathematical aspects) and then create a Matlab code to simulate the designs. We will explore how various key parameters like sweep, aspect ratio, twist and others can affect the overall behavior of wings. Finally, we will incorporate viscous effects into the Weissinger method to allow for a more robust analysis, including flow separation and stall. This course includes many real-world examples and provides a more hands-on approach to airfoil and wing analysis. If you are an engineering student, aviation enthusiast, industry or engineering student, or simply want to learn more about the application of aerodynamic theory, this is the course for you.
