Description
Distillation Columns Course: Fundamentals of Operation and Design. Distillation columns of varying designs and applications are found throughout the oil refining, petrochemical, chemical and process industries today. This course is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the details of distillation column design and operation. This understanding is a prerequisite for the successful operation of your plant. This course consists of 5 main elements:
1- Vapor-liquid equilibrium: (thermodynamics of pure components and complex mixtures)
- Volatility of pure components: boiling point, vapor pressure
- The concept of sensible and latent heat
- Behavior of mixtures during distillation: dew and bubble points, evaporation curves, condensation and complete/partial evaporation, separation of liquid and vapor and distribution of components based on their volatility.
- Relationship between temperature, pressure and composition of distillate and residue
- ,
2- Industrial distillation methods:
- Operating parameters of the industrial distillation column (pressure, temperature, flow rate, reflux ratio…)
- Separator performance: number of stages, liquid and vapor flow, location of feed inlet
- Column pressure: pressure control and pressure profile along the column
- Internal flow profiles, concentration and temperature profiles, concentration peaks
- Column material balance: concepts of separation point, separation quality and fragility
- Heat balance: condenser and boiler functions, reflux and boiling ratio and industry settings
- Instrumentation and process control rings around the column
- ,
3- Industrial distillation equipment:
- Tablets: technology, performance, flexibility
- Packaging (structured or random): technology, performance, flexibility
- Different types of contact systems for the active zone: bubble caps, fixed or floating valves
- Distributors, collectors and distributors of liquid or steam
- Problems like flooding, crying, pollution…
- ,
4- Evaluating the performance of the distillation column using ASPEN PLUS (a chemical engineering simulator)
- Base case
- Influence of temperature
- Pressure effect
- Impact of the location of the feed level
- Influence of the reflux ratio
- ,
5- Resolved issues
- Ethylene/fragile ethane
- Reboiler operation
- Flash separator
- Overhead operation of the distillation column
- A case study on the Depropanizer
- ,
Numerous illustrations, cross-sectional views, diagrams and animations are found throughout this course, enhancing the value of the course as a teaching tool and industry reference for personnel involved in distillation operations. Therefore, this course is not only aimed at experienced engineers and operators for whom knowledge of the distillation process is vital for the efficient operation of distillation columns, but will also be considered as a study guide for undergraduate students in the fields of chemical engineering, chemistry, petrochemical and oil. ,
