Explanation
Methods and Statistics in Social Sciences. Identify interesting questions, analyze data, and accurately interpret results to make strong, evidence-based decisions. The specialization covers research methods, design and statistical analysis of social science research questions. In the final capstone project, you will apply the skills you have learned by developing your research question, collecting data, and analyzing and reporting results using statistical methods. Discover the principles of rigorous scientific methods in the social and cultural sciences. Join us and learn how to distinguish between boring science and hard research! The course will cover basic principles of science, some history and philosophy of science, research design, measurement, sampling and ethics. The course is similar to an undergraduate-level introductory course in quantitative research methods in the social sciences, but with a stronger focus on research integrity. We will use examples from social science, political science, education science, communication science and psychology. In this course you will be introduced to the basic concepts behind qualitative research in the social sciences.
You will learn to collect data, describe, analyze and interpret qualitative research. Qualitative research often involves an iterative process. We will focus on the ingredients required for this process: data collection and analysis. You won’t learn how to use qualitative methods just by watching a video, so I put a lot of emphasis on collecting data through observation and interviewing and analyzing and interpreting the data collected in other activities. Obviously, the main concepts of qualitative research will be discussed, as we will discuss quality criteria, good practices, ethics, writing analytical methods, and mixed methods. We hope to dispel prejudice, and encourage more students to pursue quality research. Understanding statistics is essential to understanding social and cultural research. In this course you will learn the basics of statistics; not only how to calculate, but also how to evaluate. This course will also prepare you for the next specialization course – the Inferential Statistics course.
