In my professional field, I use ArcGIS for Desktop. Instructions for downloading your free educational license are provided within the course. Check below to see if your computer meets the requirements to run ArcGIS.
ArcGIS requires a computer running Microsoft Windows. Visit the Esri website to check the current system requirements for ArcGIS Desktop. http://desktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/get-started/system-requirements/arcgis-desktop-system-requirements.html.
If you want to take the course using a Mac, you can, but you’ll need to be comfortable setting up and installing Microsoft Windows on your Mac using virtualization software like VirtualBox (free) BootCamp (free), Parallels, or VMWare. . If you don’t already have a Windows license, you can use a free trial, but you may need to purchase a license later. The forum post for the first course includes helpful setup tips from other students who have taken the course using Macs. Setting up the software on Mac (or Linux) is ultimately up to you and is not a currently supported configuration for this course. We hope to be able to offer cross-platform training in the near future.
This specialization is for beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of GIS. Previous knowledge of GIS will help you absorb the concepts faster, but is not required.
