Descriptions
Introduction to mathematical thinking. Learn how to think like mathematicians—a powerful cognitive process that has evolved over millennia. Mathematical thinking is not the same as doing mathematics, at least not as mathematics is typically presented in our school system. School mathematics typically focuses on learning procedures to solve highly stereotyped problems. Professional mathematicians think in certain ways to solve real-world problems, problems that may arise in everyday life, in science, or within mathematics itself. The key to success in high school math is learning to think outside the box. On the contrary, a key feature of mathematical thinking is lateral thinking—a valuable ability in the modern world. This course helps develop this important way of thinking.
