Descriptions
Oil refining demystified – Oil and gas industry, The The course is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the crude oil refining industry and break down all the major refining processes into easy-to-understand concepts using extensive graphics, process layouts and various manufacturing schemes. You You’ll first be given a brief overview of the petroleum industry to put things in perspective before your journey begins. Then You will discover the different types of crude oil, their composition, the chemical properties of their constituent hydrocarbons, and learn how refineries separate these molecules using a process called distillation. You You will also learn about the most important conversion processes used to transform petroleum fractions into higher-quality blending components for the production of gasoline, diesel, heating oil and heavy oil. You Learn how these products are made from crude oil and discover the manufacturing processes involved.
What you will learn
- Understand the fundamental differences between exploration, refining and petrochemicals
- Understand the basics of the different finishing processes
- Learn what crude oils are made of and understand the chemical properties of their hydrocarbon components such as paraffins, naphthenes, aromatics…
- Learn how the refining processes work and interact with each other (distillation, isomerization, alkylation, catalytic reforming, hydrotreater sulfur plant…)
- Understand how the main petroleum products are produced (LPG, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, heating oil, heavy oil, asphalt, lubricants …)
- Be aware that aromatics are important to the petrochemical industry, although refineries try to minimize their toxicity in gasoline.
- Note that olefinic and aromatic petrochemical precursors are specialty chemicals produced during refining processes
Who is this course suitable for?
- Students in chemical engineering, refining, petrochemicals…
- Newly hired refinery or petrochemical plant personnel and current semi-technical personnel requiring further training
- Engineers (chemistry, petrochemistry, petroleum, process engineering …)
- Refinery operators and technicians
- Support personnel of an oil company, including maintenance, logistics, supply chain, sales, marketing, quality…
- Other aid workers interested in expanding their understanding of petroleum refining
- Non-technical professionals assigned to positions in refineries
