Descriptions

Thermodynamics for Engineering Students. Thermo is the branch of physics that deals with temperature and pressure and their relationship to work and energy. Thermodynamics applies to a wide variety of applications such as internal combustion engines, heating and air conditioning systems, jet propulsion, and many, many others. What sets this course apart from others is the number of examples covered. As a long-time thermodynamics instructor, I understand the need for examples. So many teachers simply show a solution to a problem or only half-solve it and just assume the student knows how to finish it. This used to be one of my biggest frustrations as a student, so I can relate when I hear today’s students complain about it.

To prevent this frustration, this course includes many, many fully worked example problems at various levels of difficulty. I also don’t assume you know more than you do. We’ll start with the basics and work our way up to more complex material. Well, what good is learning material if you can’t check your understanding, right? To help with this, quizzes are provided throughout the course. To check your work, video solutions are provided to each quiz. In addition, the outline of the notes I use in the videos are provided as a downloadable file so you can keep going throughout the course. You’ll get handwritten lectures followed by fully worked examples. This course does NOT use PowerPoint slides. In my experience, students learn best by following the notes and writing them down rather than just listening to someone talk while staring at a bunch of slides. And of course, you’ll have the opportunity to test your knowledge with quizzes throughout the course.

What you will learn

  • Use the concepts of work and energy to evaluate control volumes and closed systems.
  • Steam tables, entropy, enthalpy and more!
