Explanation
Open FOAM Mediator
The result is in – OpenFOAM can solve all major CFD industry problems and established competitors. The ability to design everything from jet planes and engines to pipes and heat exchangers is a simple and far-reaching download. Unfortunately, as I learned the first time I used it, OpenFOAM has a steep learning curve. When I learned the basics a few years ago I quickly realized how complicated CFD is. Although I knew how to make a case and use blockMesh for some simple solvers, it is not always clear how to do real problems with basic knowledge. The principle problems were:
– Chaos: all the interesting flows were part of this and are often more art than science!
– Meshing: simple meshes cannot account for fighter jet bodies or turbines, I knew there had to be a better way.
– Nature of Mesh and Synthesis: without solutions to compare I never knew if I could trust my results.
I created this course with my younger self in mind. It is these things, including other tips and tricks, that have given me the most trouble in practice and that require the most experience/proper techniques to do well. The purpose of this course, at its end, is to show you how to do this. There are many specialized topics that we cannot cover and study in CFD to the industrial level (where salaries exceeding $ 100,000 per year are not uncommon) can easily go for a PhD and many years of experience. However, there are a few general skills that you will need again and again when you encounter practical problems in CFD. If you can master these, in my experience, you can pick up most of the rest as you go and quickly acquire the skills that are already driving the modern engineering of the future.
