Explanation
Medical Neuroscience, Medical Neuroscience explores the functional organization and neurophysiology of the central nervous system, providing a neurobiological framework to understand human behavior. In this course, you will discover the organization of neural systems in the brain and spinal cord that mediate emotion, motivate physical action, and integrate sensory input into memory, emotion and related cognitive abilities. The overall goal of this course is to provide a foundation for understanding the impairments of sensation, action and cognition that accompany injury, disease or disorder of the central nervous system. The course will build on the knowledge gained through previous studies in cell and molecular biology, general physiology and human anatomy, as we focus primarily on the central nervous system.
This online course is designed to cover all the basic concepts of neurophysiology and clinical neuroanatomy that will be presented in most first-year neuroscience courses in medical schools. However, there are several topics (e.g., biological psychology) and learning experiences (e.g., hands-on psychology) that we offer in the equivalent course offered at Duke University School of Medical Neuroscience. online. However, our goal is to faithfully present the scope and rigor of a medical school-level course experience.
What will you learn?
- Chapter 1 Neuroanatomy (weeks 1-2). This chapter covers the surface anatomy of the human brain, its internal structure, and the general nervous and motor system of the brain and spinal cord.
- Chapter 2 Neurological signaling (weeks 3-4). This chapter deals with the basic mechanisms of nerve impulses, signal generation and propagation, synaptic transmission, synaptic mechanisms of signal interaction, and neural plasticity.
- Unit 3 Sensory systems (weeks 5-7). Here, you will learn about the overall organization and function of the sensory systems that contribute to our sense of ourselves in relation to the world around us: somatic sensory systems, prorioception, vision, hearing, and the sense of balance.
- Unit 4 Motor systems (weeks 8-9). In this chapter, we will examine the organization and function of the brain and spinal cord systems that control body movement.
- Chapter 5 Brain Development (week 10). Next, we turn to neurobiological methods to establish the nervous system in embryonic development and early postnatal life; We will also consider how the mind changes throughout life.
- Chapter 6 Understanding (weeks 11-12). The course concludes with a survey of the organizational systems of the cerebral hemispheres, with an emphasis on the cortical networks that integrate vision, memory and emotion in the organization of behavior and future planning; We will also consider the mechanisms of the brain to maintain homeostasis and regulate the state of the brain.
