Explanation
Auto Repair – Auto Repair & Treatment – Auto Technician Training One of the things that interests me the most about automotive technology is how it evolves and changes. It’s also interesting that ideas from years ago often come back. In this course I have therefore concentrated on the core technology, in other words how the technology works, rather than providing many examples of specific vehicles. However, I have included some examples of Formula 1 technology, arguably the pinnacle of automotive engineering. Did you know that the 2011 McLaren MP4-26 F1 car has 11500 parts? And that’s counting the engine alone! In the past it was possible for technicians to do their entire job and be able to completely avoid the vehicle’s electrical system.
They would specialize in engines, steering/suspension, or brakes. Today there is no car system immune to the role of electrical circuits. Engine controls, electronic suspension systems, and anti-lock brakes are common in today’s cars. Even electrical systems that were once thought to be simple have evolved into computer controls. The headlights are now configured in a wide width using high-side drivers that automatically light up and turn off based on the light intensity of oncoming traffic. Today’s cars are equipped with twenty or more computers, laser-guided cruise control, sonar park assist, infrared climate control, fiber optics, transponders and radio decoders. Simple systems have become computer dependent. The auto industry has produced some amazing cars, with electronics and computer systems, but has produced little information about what makes those systems work. Once you understand how a car’s network works and how it communicates with its system and outside, you will be better able to diagnose and solve problems.
