Explanation
Groundwater Vistas are used to simulate groundwater flow and solute transport in aquifer systems. The software provides a graphical interface for building, running and analyzing quantitative flow models based on USGS e MODFLOW, MODPATHMT3D and related packages. The application of numerical modeling to groundwater problem solving is a creative process. There are many different techniques that can be applied to solve the same problem and each model has developed a preferred approach to model design. GV simplifies the use of complex three-dimensional groundwater models through a flexible user interface that allows the designer to create a variety of models. However, no software package is completely flexible and GV is no exception. There are several important concepts and ideas built into the GV that will affect the way you build your groundwater model.
The following chapter deals with these major concepts and, as such, is one of the most important parts of the GV documents. There are two main files that GV uses to define each problem. These include the input GV file (hereafter referred to as the grid file) and the digitized map file. The grid file is the actual GV file. This file keeps all the excess data in a model-independent format. Groundwater Vistas files use the “.gwv” file extension. A GWV file is a binary format that cannot be edited outside of Groundwater Vistas.
Characteristics of ESI Groundwater Vistas
- Simulate continuous flow or transient flow in confined or unconfined aquifers in one or several groundwater layers.
- Create a model, to simulate the effects of minerals or other stresses on the groundwater system.
- Plot head, drawdown, and concentration and time to evaluate the effects of wells or well locations in the region and aquifer interactions with streams and rivers. Simulate groundwater flow, head and stopes in mine ponds.
- Import/export asset data through spreadsheets, templates and other formats to transfer groundwater data.
- Use trace elements, generate lines and travel times to monitor and estimate groundwater movement for flow or contamination.
- Consider aquifer depletion caused by mine development or pumping. Run automatic or manual sensitivity analysis for selected parameters such as automatic hydraulic behavior or boundary condition behavior and change parameter values for each simulation. Groundwater Vistas produces measurement and head flow data that can then be displayed and analyzed.
